Going to a movie on Deepavali day was a must for many much like the oil bath.

All films were released only in theatres. The few flops include Maveeran, Kodi Parakkuthu and Pandia.īut the times were different then. Most of Rajini’s Deepavali releases over the years have done well: Polladhavan, Thanga Magan, Nallavanukku Nallavan Padikkathavan and so on. The makers are hoping Rajini remains a bankable star, one that the audience still love, political entry fiasco notwithstanding. Some 26 years later, Rajini is once again having a Deepavali release. Muthu was the last Deepavali release for Rajini. As if to make up for it, Thalapathi came out next year. Deepavali day in 1990 saw posters appearing on Madurai city walls that it was a day of mourning since no Rajini film was being released. But Rajini’s character in the Rudraiah-directed film had enough panache to wow audiences.įor the next two decades, Rajini had a Deepavali release almost every year barring 19. Rajini was hero in Thappu Thalangal and Thai Meethu Satyam but played a negative character in Aval Appadithan. In 1978, as many as three films of his were released for Deepavali. This year, Vijaykumar’s son is having a film release along with Rajini. Next year, Rajini’s Deepavali release was Aaru Pushpangal that had two heroes, he and Vijaykumar. Rajini played the villain in the movie, a friend of Kamal who does nothing to save Kamal from drowning in a river. Rajini was given a salary of Rs 2,000 for the Balachander movie whereas Kamal Haasan, a much bigger star then, got Rs 30,000. Introduced in 1975, Rajini had a Diwali release in 1976 with Moondru Mudichu. This year marks the 45th year of Deepavali releases for the 70-year-old star. Anirudh Ravichander, the young and budding composer, always reserves his best for Dhanush but, this time, he appears to have opted for an exception.Rajini’s first Diwali release Moondru Mudichu While Samatha looks good and acts well, Amy could do better with a few more lessons in acting. The comedy sequences shot on Dhanush and Sathish deserve definite mention.ĭhanush is in his usual elements with his vibrant performance facilitating him to score generously in an effortless manner. The characterisation of the villain should have been shaped up with more care as it simply fails to generate the much-needed impact. The final action block has been mounted and executed quite thrillingly. The second half slackens and sags a bit owing to its slow pace. The rest needs no elaboration as it runs on quite predictable lines.

But fate has something else in store for Dhanush’s dad and Dhanush finds himself in a tight spot. As time hurries past, Dhanush gets married to Samantha and everything appears picture perfect. The screenplay takes a twist with Dhanush’s family opposing their love stiffly as she belongs to a different community and is rich. The first half, which moves at a brisk pace, is fun-filled with the romantic interludes of Dhanush and Amy Jackson. Radhika Sarath Kumar delivers in her inimitable style exactly what she is capable of as she plays Dhanush’s mom. Director KS Ravikumar, who customarily sports a brief cameo in almost all of his directorial ventures, fits into the character of Dhanush’s dad quite well and emotes well too. The film is basically a family entertainer focusing on relationships between family members, especially between father and son, while the earlier outing of the actor-director combo laid focus on mother-son relationship. Dhanush appears as Thamizh whose character has two phases – one before wedding and the other one after.

Possibly for the first time in her career, Samantha has sported the look of a girl hailing from a middleclass family clad in traditional saris unlike her other outings in the recent past. The successful actor-director combo that brought us Velaiyilla Pathadhari, Dhanush and Velraj, has once again joined hands to churn out a family drama mingled with romance and sprinkled with liberal doses of comedy.
